VentureStar

This page shows some key steps in the making of the VentureStar wallpaper available in the downloads/wallpapers section. The VentureStar was a design by Lockheed Martin Skunkworks for a single stage to orbit vehicle to replace the space shuttle. The design was recently scrapped I believe.

Originals
This image was taken from either a Lockheed Martin or NASA site, I do not remember which.

Step 1
This is a mask created in order to separate the VentureStar from its background. Only the areas in white will be saved, and the rest will be made transparent.

Step 2
Here is a background with blue and green clouds and some motion blurred stars.

Step 3
The Venture Star placed on the new background.

Step 4
Some flame like things coming from what kind of looks like a thruster at the back of the VentureStar.

Final
Some lens flares added for increased dramatic effect, probably not the most realistic, but it does look good.
